Chapman University
Chapman University in Orange, CA celebrated National Athletic Training Month with various events and community service activities. The university’s Athletic Training Student Society (ATSS) hosted a successful professional continuing education seminar attended by 75 local athletic trainers and students featuring nationally-renowned therapeutic modalities expert David Draper, PhD, ATC. The ATSS also prepared and served dinners at the Orange County Ronald McDonald House and hosted a blood drive for the Red Cross. During NATM ’09, the athletic training education program was fortunate to be visited by four distinguished Hall of Fame athletic trainers, including two former NATA presidents: Julie Max, Bill Chambers, Lew Crowl, and Andy Paulin. This special guest panel discussed the history of the profession and other topics with freshmen and sophomore students in an informal open forum. Finally, the campus welcomed California Athletic Trainers’ Association President Mike West, who spoke to students regarding governmental affairs, including current critical federal and state bills, as well as the importance of political advocacy.
University of La Verne
At University of La Verne our Athletic Training Student Club had an information booth that we set up in front of our Dinning Hall. We had a large poster with facts about athletic training and certified athletic trainers and gave examples of what and where athletic trainers work and can be found in the work force. We had another smaller poster with common injuries and specific ways to treat the injuries and rehabilitate them. We had a third poster that informed students about proper shoe care and common injuries that can be caused from wearing old, bad shoes.
Then to get people to come to our booth we had a student dressed like our school mascot, a leopard, with a sign, as well as a sign stating we were giving free messages. We had many athletes and students get free messages and in order to receive the message they had to read a fact from our poster about athletic training. Then once a few athletes who had received a massage had finished they stayed and actually did their ankle rehab in front of our booth to attract more people. We had students come by and ask questions about the rehab the athletes were doing in addition to asking us for advice for ailments the students complained about. For example, their shins hurt so we would show them rehab for shin splints and tell them they should get new shoes if it applied to them and told them they could get shoe insoles to help cushion their arch where their pain could be deriving from. The information booth was a great success and we had a lot of fun letting people know it was National Athletic Training month and what an athletic trainer was.
Priory School
During March, members of the Woodside Priory National Honor Society of Sports Medicine were involved in several activities to promote awareness for National Athletic Training Month. These activities included a school-wide bake sale and relay race during break. Cookies in the shape of bones, body parts, injuries, and other sports medicine-related shapes were sold to encourage Priory students to learn about and explore athletic training. Profits from these sales were donated back to the school for Lent.
The NHSSM members also participated in and organized a relay race. The race was composed of four stages: ice, crutches, taping, and the three-legged race. Student and faculty volunteers from each class formed teams of four and showcased their athletic training skills as they speedily ice-wrapped a knee, crutched across the plaza, taped an ankle, and bound their legs with Thera-bands for the three-legged race. The team that finished the relay with the fastest time and neatest tape job won the race. Both the bake sale and the relay were highly successful in celebrating National Athletic Training Month and bringing Priory’s attention to the world of sports medicine.

University of the Pacific
During National Athletic Training Month, Athletic Training Students in the ATEP at the University of the Pacific wrote articles highlighting the profession of Athletic Training to be published in the University newspaper, the Pacifican. Three articles were written, as one of the weeks was spring break and a newspaper was not distributed that week. The first in the series of three articles described the profession to clear up any confusion between Athletic Training and Personal Training. The next article focused on two new career paths in Athletic Training; law enforcement and physician extender. Our third installment was a salute to the Certified Athletic Trainers at the University of the Pacific. The purpose of this series of articles was to inform Pacific students of the profession and to showcase its diversity of career paths and individuals.
Skyline College
Skyline College hosts a big conference every spring during the month of March called "Expanding Your Horizons". This program is to expose 6-12th grade girls to math and science oriented professions. This program bring sup to 1,000 students on campus. Although we do not hold the event just for National Athletic Training Month, but as part of that program we use it as our way to celebrate our profession. We do ask for volunteers from the athletic training community and athletic training curriculum students at San Jose State, for help with the program as a way for them to celebrate National Athletic Training Month and also as a way for them to give back to the profession and the community. We offer three 1 1/2 hour workshops as part of that program to educate the girls about careers in athletic training. We had 75 girls participate in the athletic training and sports medicine workshop this year. First the girls watch a powerpoint presentation about athletic training careers and the educational requirements to become an ATC. Then the girls participate in a laboratory session where we teach them some basic first aid for sprains (ankle) including an ankle compression wrap then they learn some basic finger taping techniques. Athletic Training interns from Skyline College and San Jose State Athletic Training Program, along with some local ATC's help to teach the lab part of the workshop.

We also had visual PA announcements that were played on multiple TV screens in the lobby of our gym that was played during basketball and volleyball games.

The purpose of this annual event is to promote the field of athletic training and inspire, encourage and motivate students towards success in sports related healthcare professions. This year’s event was video taped, with excerpts of the program entered in the CATA YOUTUBE contest. The audience consisted of CSUDH Kinesiology faculty and staff, and their KIN students.
